A Brief History of the History of State Shapes
Yesterday, after polishing off six whiskey sours and a chaser of Icehouse, I checked out this engrossing program on the History Channel called “How the States Got Their Shapes.” It answered many age-old geographic questions, such as “what’s with all those square states out West” (lines of latitude and longitude!) and “why is Florida shaped like a wang” (geology!).
